The McColl School of Business is pleased to announce the 2008-2009 Leaders in Action Lecture Series schedule.  These speakers will integrate business knowledge and leadership skills, focusing on competence, character and commitment to community.

Herb Henkel, Ingersoll-Rand Company

Herbert L. Henkel
was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ingersoll-Rand Company in May 2000, and continues as President and Chief Executive Officer.  He came to Ingersoll-Rand in April 1999 from Textron, Inc. where he was president and chief operating officer, where he had previously served as both president of Textron’s Industrial Products segment, group vice president with responsibility for Textron’s industrial segment, and  president of Greenlee Textron.  Before joining Textron, Henkel was president and chief operating officer of Southern Fastening Systems and Unifast Industries, Inc.  He had previously served as vice president of sales and marketing for Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company and Hilti, Inc.

Henkel holds a bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineering and applied mechanics and a master of science degree in mechanical engineering from Polytechnic University.  Also, he holds a master’s degree in business administration from Pace University.  He is a director of C. R. Bard Inc. and the 3M Company.
 

Dr. Jack Caravelli

Dr. Jack Caravelli has over 25 years of experience in national security issues, including service at the highest levels of government.  Dr. Caravelli most recently served as a senior adviser to the Department of Energy’s Office of Plans and Policy.  He served on the White House National Security Council staff as Director for Nonproliferation from 1996-1999.  From 1999-2002 Dr. Caravelli was Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Department of Energy and Director of the Office of International Material Protection and Cooperation.  Dr. Caravelli began his career with the Central Intelligence Agency, serving in various managerial, staff, and analytic positions from 1982-1996, and has also been featured in the USA Today, NOVA, and ABC News.  

Currently, Dr. Caravelli is a visiting professor to the United Kingdom Defense Academy in Shrivingham, England.  In addition, he serves as an Advisory Board Member for Oxford University’s International Security and Counterterrorism Program and as a Director for The PAM Institute with offices in Washington, DC and Charlotte, North Carolina.  He holds a Ph.D. in International Affairs from Georgetown University.
 

Veronica (Ronee) Hagen, Polymer Group, Inc.

Ronee Hagen is a 25 year executive veteran of global operational management and commercial business leadership.  As CEO of Polymer Group, Inc., Hagen heads the leading producer and marketer of engineered materials with over $1 billion in sales.  PGI is a global supplier to leading consumer and industrial product manufacturers with the broadest range of process technologies in the nonwovens industry.  The company operates 21 manufacturing and converting facilities throughout the world. 

Prior to Polymer Group, Inc., Hagen was the President and CEO of Sappi Fine Paper, a $1.4 billion division of the South African based global leader in the pulp and paper industry, Sappi Limited.  At Sappi, she achieved year-over-year improvement in cash flow and profitability with a strong focus on safety, productivity and working capital management while also fostering growth by providing added value to customers. 

Hagen is a member of the Boards of Directors of Polymer Group, Inc. and Newmont Mining Corporation.  Hagen is also a member of a number of organizations, including The Committee of 200, the Chicago Network, Women Corporate Directors, and The Economic Club of Chicago.  She was also a past member of the boards of the Boston Ballet and the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
 

Jim Morgan, Krispy Kreme

Jim Morgan serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Krispy Kreme.

James H. (Jim) Morgan (60), was named President and Chief Executive Officer of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. in January 2008.  Mr. Morgan has been a member of the Krispy Kreme Board of Directors since 2000 and was elected its Chairman in 2005.

 

Mr. Morgan is a former Chairman of Covenant Capital LLC, and former General Partner and Chief Investment Officer for Morgan Crossroads Fund.  Prior to joining the Board of Directors at Krispy Kreme, Jim served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Wachovia Securities following the acquisition of Interstate/Johnson Lane, Inc. (IJL) by Wachovia Corporation. Before it was acquired by Wachovia Corporation, Mr. Morgan served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Interstate/Johnson Lane, Inc.  

 

Morgan is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He is a driven executive with a love for people and a keen ability to see the potential within an organization.  Jim has served as Chairman of the Board for the Metro YMCA of Charlotte, NC and is a past Chairman of the Carolina Youth Commission. 

Ellen Ruff, Duke Energy Carolinas

Ellen Ruff is president, office of nuclear development, for Duke Energy. She is responsible for furthering the development of new nuclear generation in the Carolinas, including advancing Duke Energy’s plans for the proposed Lee Nuclear Station in Cherokee County, S.C. She was named to her current position in December 2008.

Ruff has served as president of Duke Energy Carolinas since April 2006. She led Duke Energy’s utility business in North Carolina and South Carolina, serving approximately 2.4 million customers in a 24,000-square-mile service area.

Ruff joined Duke Power in 1978 as an attorney in the legal department. She was named vice president and general counsel of electric operations following the creation of Duke Energy in 1997; vice president and general counsel of corporate, gas and electric operations in January 1999; senior vice president and general counsel for Duke Energy in February 2001; and senior vice president of asset management for Duke Power in August 2001. She was named senior vice president of power policy and planning in February 2003, and group vice president of power policy and planning in March 2004. She was named group vice president of planning and external relations in March 2005. She was named to her current position in April 2006.

A native of Hartford, Conn., Ruff graduated from Simmons College with a bachelor of arts degree in business, and earned a juris doctor degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Ruff is involved in a number of community and professional activities. She serves on the board of directors and the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Chamber. In 2006, she was appointed by N.C. Governor Mike Easley to serve a three-year term on the North Carolina Economic Development Board. Ruff is a board member of the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance and a member of the Palmetto Business Forum. She is a member of the board of directors of the United Way of Central Carolinas and serves as chair of the organization’s 2008 regional campaign. She also serves on the board of Aqua America Inc., a publicly traded water company. She and her husband, Tom, have a daughter and two sons.

Duke Energy, one of the largest power companies in the United States, supplies and delivers electricity to approximately 4 million customers in the Carolinas and the Midwest.

Charles G. Raymond is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Horizon Lines.  Mr. Raymond has spent his entire 40-year career in the transportation industry.  He has served as senior vice president and chief transportation officer for Sea-Land and as an executive officer of CSX Corporation.  Mr. Raymond was Chairman of the Marine Transportation System National Advisory Council from 2000-2003 and in December 2004 was appointed by the Secretary for Homeland Security to a five year term to serve on the National Maritime Security Advisory Committee.

He is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program.  Mr. Raymond is a member of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), The National Cargo Bureau, and serves on various industry boards.  He currently serves on the board of the McColl School and also the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Raymond is the recipient of many industry honors including induction into the International Maritime Hall of Fame, receiving the coveted Admiral of the Ocean Seas award,  in 2005 Mr. Raymond received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
 

Patrick Graham, Urban League of Central Carolinas, Inc.

Dr. Patrick C. Graham is the President and CEO of the Urban League of Central Carolinas, Inc.  Previously, Dr. Graham served as the Director of Emergency Financial Assistance and Economic Self-Sufficiency at Crisis Assistance Ministry from 2001 to 2007, and prior to that as Executive Director for the Martin Luther King Center in Long Beach, NY.

Dr. Graham is currently President of the Diversity Council of the Carolinas and a board member for the Energy Committed to Offenders organization.  He is also on the board of the North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness.  Graham was recently voted Omega Man of the Year by the Charlotte chapter of Omega Psi Phi in November 2007.  In 2006, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity named Graham Citizen of the Year for North and South Carolina.  He also participated in the Leadership Charlotte program in 2005.
