Based on research that adult learning occurs outside of the classroom in
experiential situations and that adults learn most when they have a reason
to use the information, the PMBA leadership development course is a
non-traditional, experiential class. The course spans 2 semesters. We have
four seminars that occur within a classroom setting.
The four seminars focus
on the following:
1. Introduction to Leadership
2.
Assessments: Myers Briggs profile, 360-degree Feedback; Introduction to Coaching
3. Introduction to local/regional
non-profits and community issues
4. Presentation of
community leadership assignments
Woven throughout these seminars are
several required activities. They are listed below with the appropriate
links for more information.
The McColl Network
What sets the McColl School apart from other MBA programs?
Our students tell us that it is the McColl Network.
We provide a unique experience that allows our students the opportunity to
interact with professional coaches, seasoned executives, and a network of
business professionals from our community.
Coaching
Each leadership student is required to spend 4-6 months meeting with a
professional coach. The McColl School is associated with approximately 50
coaches. These coaches include executives and professional coaches
who volunteer their time to work with our students.
Executives-In-Residence
The McColl School has 4 on-going Executives-In-Residence. In addition to the
4 ongoing Executives in Residence, we invite the winner of the Business
Woman of the Year award to serve the academic year following her award. McColl School Executives-In-Residence are executives who have established
reputations as effective leaders, have substantial experience to share, and
are willing to share that experience with our MBA students. Leadership students meet with each executive in small
discussion groups. In addition, these executives are available for
one-on-one meetings as requested by the students.
Networking Mentors
The McColl School of Business
provides leadership students access to networking mentors so that they can
strengthen their skills of building relationships with and without an
immediate agenda, expand their contacts in the community, benefit from the
wisdom of others’ experience and develop their overall leadership capacity.
If you are interested in volunteering as a networking mentor, please contact
Amanda Pekrul.
Community Leadership Assignment
We believe that community involvement is beneficial for both the community
and business. Following seminar 3, each student chooses a non-profit
or community issue that interests them for their community leadership
assignment. The goal of this assignment is to involve students in the
Charlotte community with active participation.
Leaders In Action Lecture Series
The
Leaders In Action Lecture
Series integrates business knowledge and leadership skills, focusing on
competence, character and commitment to community.
