Based on research that adult learning occurs outside of the classroom in
experiential situations and that adults learn most when they have a reason
to use the information, the PMBA and MSOD leadership development program is a
non-traditional, experiential class. The course spans 2 semesters. We have
four seminars that occur within a classroom setting.
The four seminars focus
on the following:
1. Introduction to Leadership
2.
Self Awareness: Big 5/MBTI or DISC Assessment, Motivated
Leader Profile, Resilience Quotient, 360-degree Feedback and development of
an Individual Development Plan
3. Work one-on-one with a professional
business coach and with networking mentors to better understand your
assessments and implement your development plan.
4. Hands on participation and
immersion with local/regional
non-profits and community issues.
5. Presentation of
an individual community leadership assignment.
The McColl Network
What sets the McColl School apart from other graduate business programs?
Our students tell us that it is the McColl Network.
We provide a unique experience that allows our students the opportunity to
interact with professional coaches, seasoned executives, and a network of
business professionals from our community.
Pro-Bono Executive
Coaching
Each leadership student is required to spend 4-6 sessions meeting with a
professional executive coach. The McColl School is associated with
approximately 50 business coaches who lend their time and talents to our
students as pro-bono executive coaches. The goal is for students to
become familiar with coaching and to incorporate it as part of their ongoing
leadership development in the future.
Executives-In-Residence
The McColl School has several on-going Executives-In-Residence. In addition
to the ongoing Executives in Residence, we invite the winner of the Business
Woman of the Year award to serve the academic year following her award.
McColl School Executives-In-Residence are executives who have established
reputations as effective leaders, have substantial experience to share, and
are willing to share that experience with our graduate students. Leadership students meet with each executive in small
discussion groups. In addition, these executives are available for
one-on-one meetings as requested by the students.
Currently the Executives in Residence for the 2009-2010 Academic Year are:
Laurie Wilks
Jennifer Appleby
Eileen Friars
Peter Browning
Bill Boyd
Frank Gentry
Don McIlnay
Networking Mentors
The McColl School of Business
provides leadership students access to networking mentors so that they can
strengthen their skills of building relationships with and without an
immediate agenda, expand their contacts in the community, benefit from the
wisdom of others’ experience and develop their overall leadership capacity.
If you are interested in volunteering as a networking mentor, please contact
Christa Robaina.
Community Leadership Assignment
We believe that community involvement is beneficial for both the community
and business. Following seminar 3, each student chooses a non-profit
or community issue that interests them for their community leadership
assignment. The goal of this assignment is to involve students in the
Charlotte community with active participation.

The
BB&T Distinguished
